Cul-de-sac

Nom masculin

1. Rue, chemin, passage, lieu sans issue ; impasse.

2. Situation, entreprise, carrière sans issue.

3. Repli anatomique, cavité sur laquelle ne débouche aucun autre organe tels ceux du vagin, de la plèvre, du péritoine.

4. Par extension: tentative inutile, échec prévisible.

5. The title of our archive, resulting from the nine months we spent in Grenoble, during the participation to the Session 22 of the Ecole du Magasin. Throughout this adventure, we carried the impulse to discover the practice of artists we crossed on our way. Our path has a temporal point of departure and an irreversible end. As it happens when one intentionally enters a cul-de-sac, there might be a surprise at the end of the street, a cop-out to a new beginning. This diary, in our case.

The curatorial diary CUL-DE-SAC represents a first attempt of spontaneous and non institutionalized collaboration between Ecole Supérieure d’Art et Design Grenoble-Valence and Ecole du Magasin, which are two of the most relevant art institutions in Grenoble. It presents an unexpected experience. In most of the cases, it captures the vivid exchange between artist and curator, which is crucial to the progress of their mutual engagement. This archive gathers all the data (including impressions, chats, thoughts, meetings and researches) we collected during this concluded experience: the journey into the cul-de-sac, indeed. It considers local and international art scene, presents emerging and well-established artists.

The material divulged in this diary has been subjectively selected from our experience and could be considered as the meeting point between our professional collaboration and our friendship. The methodology of selection and presentation of the material may seem even random, but along with that it clearly represents, within the form of a creative report, the fortuitous chances we encountered.

Fascination, sincere respect and gratefulness binds us to this book. It is an example of how a dead end may be an open high way.
